Roles & Responsibilities of General Psychiatrist:

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and assessments of patients to diagnose mental health disorders.
  • Prepare and execute treatment plans in view of patient assessments, including prescription administration, psychotherapy, and other restorative mediations.
  • Monitor and adjust treatment plans as necessary to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Provide education to patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  • Prepare patient progress reports, treatment plans, and other relevant information in medical records according to professional and legal standards.
  • Take part in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings to discuss patient cases and develop integrated care plans.
  • Work together with other healthcare professionals, such as psychologists, social workers, and primary care physicians, to coordinate comprehensive care for patients.
  • Provide emergency support as needed, including assessing and managing acute psychiatric emergencies.
  • Educate for the mental health needs of patients within healthcare systems and the broader community.

Qualification to Become General Psychiatrist:

  • Must have a medical Degree (M.B.B.S.) from recognized a medical university
  • Must have completed the Psychiatry Residency Program accredited by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • Must have obtained medical licensure from the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • Must have clinical experience with the help of residency training and possibly fellowships.
  • Must have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must adhere to ethical and professional standards set by the Indian Psychiatric Society and MCI.
  • Must display cultural competency in patient care.
