The Evolution Of Web Capabilities

Internet Web 5.0

A new and surprising proposal has recently been unveiled by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s Bitcoin Venture TBD to start building the next evolution of the internet : Web5, also known as Web 5.0 or the evolution of Web 3.0 with an aim to return “ownership of data and identity to individuals’’. That is what Web3 has been offering and promoting. Also, The interaction of data can be controlled by users and how it will be used over the internet. The internet has grown, changed and become more engaging since its inception. From Web 1.0 to Web 5.0, the Web capabilities have continued to evolve.

Early Stages of World Wide Web

The earliest stage of the World Wide Web is Web 1.0 which was known as ‘The information and read-Only Web’. It was mainly ‘read-only web’ & was quite static and mono directional. Majority of users were content consumers rather than content producers. By 2000, we shifted from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. Darcy DiNucci coined the term Web 2.0 in 1999. It refers to websites that emphasise user-generated content, usability, & interoperability for end-users worldwide. It’s the “read and write” Internet. So, Web 2.0 was all about reading, writing, and creating. So, users joined social platforms like blogs, Facebook and You Tube and these platforms got big because of this created content. Web 2.0 showcased a path to a unique way for people on the internet to engage in different activities. The number of internet users worldwide increased from 1.02 billion in 2005 to 4.9 billion in 2021. Web 2.0 was able to enable the expansion of the internet by opening new opportunities for content creators to share new and incredible things. This Web 2.0 is the web we use of today.

Web 3.0, also known as the Semantic Web, is an evolving term refers to the next generation of Internet – a “read-write-execute” web – with decentralization as its bedrock. So, builders & creators own a piece of their own community, through NFTs, tokens etc. Web 3.0, is the third iteration of the internet where online activities and data would be represented by crypto wallets and websites hosted through decentralized applications (dApps) to leverage open-source, trustless, and permissionless blockchain networks. Web 3.0 will be driven by Artificial Intelligence & machine learning. The benefits of Web3 include more privacy, security, scalability, & decentralization. Despite the growth, it might be mandatory for Web 3.0 to continue growing in the coming years before understanding whether it could replace Web 2.0.

Web 4.0

Web 4.0, often known as webOS, or The symbiotic web, is still a work-in-progress, with no precise description of what it will entail. The read-write-execution-concurrency web will be Web 4.0. The symbiotic web’s dream is to have Interaction between people and robots in symbiosis. The creation of more sophisticated interfaces, such as mind-controlled interfaces will be enabled by Web 4.0. It will be a middleware that will eventually act as an operating system (Web 1.0 Web 2.0 Web 3.0 Web 4.0 Web 5.0). Although little is known about web 4.0 and its technologies, the web is advancing toward becoming an intelligent web by incorporating artificial intelligence.

Web 5.0 Combination of Web 3.0 and Web 2.0

If we could simplify Web 5.0, it is Web 2.0 plus Web 3.0 that will allow users to ‘own their identity’ on the Internet and ‘control their data’. Web 5.0 is the sensory and emotive Web. It aims to create computers that can communicate with humans. Currently, web users still don’t have total control over their data and identity, its usage, & the security aspect i.e. still a much concern in web 3.0; web 5.0 is promising to give complete control of data and identity to users because this information will be saved with the users. Browser 5.0, also known as the “telepathic and emotive web,” would be available after 2030.

Currently, Web2 and Web3 are in transition phase. Web2 could be split into Web3 and Web5, which would give new opportunities to companies, developers, & individuals to take decision which sort of internet would work better. Both Web 3.0 and Web 5.0 envision an Internet without threat of censorship – from governments or big tech, and without fear of significant outages. Nevertheless, Jack Dorsey & its team have embarked on a odyssey that involves making Bitcoin the standard and relying on it as one of the most pivotal things for humans to become self-sovereign
